About each item in the illustration:

The canoe is inspired by a vintage Mansfield fiberglass canoe with inlaid wooden ribs that I used to paddle. It was better suited fo rlakes, but I did take it on the rover sometimes.

The pack is inspired by the original canvas and leather Duluth Pack invented in 1882 by Camille Poirier, a French-Canadian immigrant, and is still manufactured today in Minnesota. The packs have been traditionally used to pack gear for multi-day (or month) backcountry paddle trips into the Boundary waters or the Quetico, and are designed to sit upright in your backcountry canoe, keeping the pack opening (and your stuff) dry and away from the wet & muddy canoe bottom.

The fish is one that many midwest fishermen seek as a trophy: largemouth bass. Largemouth bass is native to the middle of the US from Minnestota to Ohio to Florida to Central Texas.

The bird is a Great Blue Heron, which can often be found quietly stalking the river's edge, jabbing the water every so often for a fish, and letting canoes bassing by get tantalizingly close. But not too close: The GBH will fly down river a bit, where you will find it again, still fishing, and the cycle repeats over and over again for miles.
